Excavation & grading in Vancouver, WA and Clark County

Every concrete job starts in the dirt. MJ Concrete digs out, grades and compacts the site so driveways, patios, slabs and foundations sit on firm ground and drain the right way.

Excavation to the right depth

For a driveway, patio or walkway, the topsoil and soft ground come out so the concrete and its gravel base sit on firm soil. Footings and foundations go deeper, down to undisturbed soil below the frost line. Roots, old fill and buried debris come out too, since they rot or settle under a slab.

Grading and slope before a pour

Grading sets the shape of the ground before the forms go in. A driveway needs to run toward the street or a drain, a patio needs to fall away from the house, and the ground around a foundation should drop away from the walls. Getting that slope right in the dirt is what makes the finished concrete shed water.

Gravel base and compaction

Flatwork usually sits on a layer of crushed gravel, compacted in layers until it’s firm. A loose base settles over time and takes the concrete with it, so this step matters as much as the pour. Before any digging, 811 is called so buried utility lines get marked, as Washington law requires.

Questions about excavation & grading

How deep do you dig for a driveway?

Deep enough to clear the topsoil and soft ground and fit the gravel base plus the concrete, usually around 8 to 10 inches in all for a car driveway, and more where the ground is soft.

Why does the gravel base matter?

Concrete is strong pressing down but cracks when the ground under it moves. A compacted gravel base spreads the load and drains water, so the slab stays flat.

Do I need to call 811 before digging?

Whoever is digging does. Washington law requires a locate request at least two business days before digging so the utility companies can mark their lines. On our jobs, we make that call.

Can you grade around the house so water runs away from it?

Grading around new concrete is part of the job, and the ground next to the house should slope away from the foundation. Our paving-related drainage page covers bigger water problems.
