Driveway sealing in Vancouver, WA and Clark County
Sealer soaks into or coats the top of a concrete driveway so water, oil and moss have a harder time getting in. In our wet climate it’s one of the cheapest ways to keep a driveway looking new.

Why seal a concrete driveway in Clark County
Concrete is porous. In Clark County it rains most days from October to May, and water that soaks into a driveway carries dirt in with it, feeds moss in the shady spots and can flake the surface when it freezes. Sealer slows all of that down, and it makes oil drips and stains wipe up instead of soaking in.
Two kinds of concrete sealer
Penetrating sealers soak into the concrete and leave the surface looking the same, with no shine and no change to the grip. Film-forming sealers, usually acrylics, sit on top and bring out the color, which is why they’re used on stamped concrete and exposed aggregate. A film sealer on a driveway or walkway should have a non-slip additive mixed in.
When and how often to seal a driveway
New concrete needs to cure before most sealers go on, usually about a month after the pour. After that, film sealers are usually redone every 2 to 3 years, and penetrating sealers last longer. Before sealing, the driveway is cleaned so the sealer bonds to the concrete instead of the dirt on it.

Questions about driveway sealing
Does a concrete driveway need to be sealed?
A plain broom finish driveway doesn’t have to be, but sealing helps it hold up to rain, oil and moss. Stamped concrete and exposed aggregate should be sealed to protect the color and the surface.
How often should I reseal my driveway?
Film-forming sealers, the glossy kind used on stamped concrete and exposed aggregate, every 2 to 3 years. Penetrating sealers usually last longer.
Will sealer make my driveway slippery?
A glossy film sealer can be slick when it’s wet, so a non-slip additive goes in on driveways, walkways and steps. Penetrating sealers don’t change the grip.
How soon can I drive on a freshly sealed driveway?
It depends on the sealer. Plan on keeping cars off for at least a day so it can cure.
