Concrete work in Vancouver, WA and Clark County

Concrete construction and pouring, from flatwork like driveways, patios and walkways to footings, foundations and walls. If it’s concrete, it’s what MJ Concrete does.

Concrete flatwork and structural work

Flatwork is concrete that lies flat on the ground: driveways, patios, walkways, sidewalks and slabs. Structural work holds something up: footings, foundation walls and retaining walls. Both start the same way, with firm ground, a solid base and forms set straight.

How a concrete pour day goes

The forms are set and the base is compacted before the concrete arrives. When the truck pulls up, the concrete goes straight from the chute or is wheeled in where the truck can’t reach, then it’s spread, leveled and finished while it’s still workable. Edges are tooled, control joints are cut, and the new concrete is coned off while it cures.

Pouring concrete in Clark County weather

Rain and a few hard freezes each winter shape how concrete gets built here. Pour days are planned around the forecast, fresh concrete is protected from freezing and from drying out too fast, and everything is sloped so water runs off instead of sitting on it.

Questions about concrete work

What’s the difference between cement and concrete?

Cement is the gray powder that acts as the glue. Concrete is cement mixed with sand, gravel and water. Driveways, patios and foundations are all concrete.

How much concrete do I need?

One cubic yard covers about 81 square feet at 4 inches thick, the usual thickness for a patio or walkway. We work out the exact amount when we measure.

Why are there lines cut into concrete?

Those are control joints. Concrete shrinks a little as it cures, and the joints give it a planned place to crack in a straight line instead of across the middle of a slab.
